So you’re a hero… you’re slicing your way through fields and forests, through graveyards and dungeons, and along the way you encounter all manner of skeletons, spiders, and sentient blobs in severe need of stabbing.
You slice and stab and loot on your way to find the princess or in search of an ancient relic, but do you ever stop to think about the lives and thoughts of these skeletons, spiders, or sentient blobs? After all, blobs are people too. Sort of.
Dungeon Crawlers is a web comic that explores that very idea. The comic follows two blobs named Bo and Jasper, low level guards in a dungeon. They don’t stay there long however, their adventures take them across deserts, frozen wastelands, nefarious forests, even back in time.
Bo and Jasper appear to live inside a game of Dungeons and Dragons, or similar game, with ocassional appearances from the ‘Hand of God’ to cast a die and determine someone’s fate.
The art is a lot of fun and quite good, sometimes exhibiting an insane amount of detail while the dialogue and plot are entertaining and interesting. So much so that I read the entirely of the comics 100+ strips in one sitting… and, now I’m sad.
I was also pleased to find that instead of another strip, number 99 took a quick departure from the story and gave us a four minute cartoon. It’s especially impressive when you realize that every element (voices and music excluded) was completed by one person. You don’t necessarily need to read every strip to enjoy the animation but it wouldn’t hurt either.
In short, I’ve found many a web comic that I didn’t like or tired of quickly, but this one held up and kept me interested. I’ll certainly return to it as new strips come out. Dungeon Crawlers recently hit their hundredth strip, here’s hoping for hundreds more.
You can find Dungeon Crawlers here. Watch the animated episode below and give yourself a taste. A taste of blob. Tastes good, promise.
