Amazing Spider-Man 551

Alright, this is the sixth issue of Amazing Spider-Man since Quesada shat all over us. I hate to admit, but it’s not so bad. The only reason it’s hard to get through is the bad taste One More Day left in my mouth. Had this been like Spider-Man: Blue, or any other series told “out of continuity” for the sake of a fun story, I’d sell this to everyone.

But, because this follows One More Day, and is trying to fit into MARVEL continuity, it’s constantly shoving it down my throat. They are trying to tie in classic Spidey quips or sayings while tying it into continuity. A few examples:

“I bet Captain America doesn’t have these kinds of problems. Then again, he’s dead.” Or how about the new character Jackpot, the one that mysteriously acts a lot like MJ. Every other time she runs into Spidey she’s spouting out some mad lib using jackpot, tiger and hit.

This isn’t to say that good things haven’t come from this new “care-free” Spidey. It just feels like MARVEL is really desperate to prove they can write a classic Amazing Spider-Man story in the present day.

Some things work, a lot don’t.
