Being from the Cleveland area originally, there is a big place in my heart and a lot of hometown spirit for Superman. That being said, while Cleveland is considered the birthplace of the Man of Steel, it is not the birthplace of one of his creators, Joe Shuster.
Because of this, the Royal Canadian Mint is commemorating the Torontonian birth of Shuster with a series of seven specially minted Superman coins. Here’s what Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander had to say about the decision behind minting the coins.
“The generations of young people who grew up reading Superman comics may not have fully appreciated the story behind them, Our government celebrates Canada’s history and heritage and the very values and strengths that Superman embodies.”
They are definitely cool looking, as you can see below. I particularly like the idea of the Lenticular “Then and Now” coin and stamp set which switches between an iconic pose by Shuster, which transitions into Jim Lee’s rendition of that pose. While the coins are available for order on the Mint’s website, you’re going to want some deep pockets with prices ranging from $29.75 CAD for the coin and stamp set to $750 CAD for the 14-karat gold Superman: The Early Years coin. So while I covet these, I think I’ll just admire them from afar.

Yessir, pretty impressive indeed, but wait! This isn’t the first time Superman’s anniversary has been used to hawk coins. While not legal currency, they were still pretty nice. I thought our readers might get a kick out of seeing these as well, so enjoy!
