The Wizeguy: Cameo Centric

My new favorite weekly game while watching Disney +’s She Hulk: Attorney At Law is “How will this upset the Online Men?”

TOXIC SHE-HULK ? SHOW ACCUSES CRITICS OF BEING WOMAN-HATERS; WHY MCU PHASE 4 IS FAILING.

There, I barely had to rub two brain cells together to crap that headline out. I’m sure that bit will help a certain segment with their algorithm, but they didn’t need much prodding to manufacture some good ol’ fashioned misogyny to begin with. Now, you know the scene that pissed off a certain subsection of the internet (spoilers to follow) the twerking dance party heard round the world. The surprise cameo of Megan Thee Stallion in Episode three’s post credits scene seemed to trigger some people like crazy. In the 10(?), 20(?), 30 second clip, Jen-as-She-Hulk (played by Tatiana Maslany) participated in an office dance party with the entertainer.

Look, I don’t really care either way for twerking (pro-twerk? con-twerk?) any more than my parents cared for my b-boy lifestyle in the ‘80s or their parents cared for sock hops when they were kids, but GD it’s super weird to get that spun up about it. It was all in fun. It’s a good show, and it was a fun scene. These neckbeards and their reactions are making me want to stop criticizing the linguistic legitimacy of Megan Thee Stallion’s stage name. Just let people have their thing.

I feel like this is a modern day Rorschach test. How you feel about the She-Hulk twerking scene reveals you. Truth, 100% of everyone complaining about this would have been laughing their asses off if it was Deadpool shaking it. They just don’t like women.

I need to ask, what did you think this show was going to be? It seems like a certain populace wanted it to be something it NEVER was going to, and they should reset expectations. So far the show has given us the best look at the world around the MCU heroes, showed us how civilians coped and culturalized all the major MCU events; gave us a look into the private lives of Bruce and Wong outside of all the world ending crises. At the same time slowly reveal to us Jen’s growth from being apprehensive of her Hulk persona to becoming more comfortable with the benefits. All within four – 20 minute episodes. And hear me out, It’s showing what women go through at work and in life.

Did you ever consider that maybe it’s not for you? The series is hitting precisely the campy courtroom sitcom tone its meaning to. Its creators have always said they were doing something different. If you don’t care for it, just move along. The She-Hulk comics that’ve inspired this show aren’t standard superhero comics either. If you are into comic books, may I recommend the Dan Slott run on She Hulk, which is essentially Ally McBeal with superheroes.

Jessica Gao and the rest of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law writers *correctly* identifying what was going to be said about their show by a bunch of chuckle-effs regardless of what they actually did and deciding to embrace and tackle it head on has been just wonderful. Shouldn’t be much of a surprise with Gao coming out of the Rick & Morty writing room. Twerk or no-twerk, I get it that this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. However, with such a large expanse of intellectual property the MCU holds, you will inevitably get approaches like this. Sorry. Not sorry. I hope you’re enjoying their outrage as much as I am.
