Box Office Report

With the 5th best August opening of all time “Straight Outta Compton” performed very well. It didn’t have a lot of competition, it had a hell of a lot of hype, and it was produced by 2 of the guys in the band. It was set up to do well. Our very own hip-hop head reviewer loved it, in fact I haven’t seen many who haven’t.

The other new film in the Top 5 didn’t fare so well. “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” only made $13.4 million. That is not a strong opening. This movie has had a long development and has switched stars and directors and unfortunately just couldn’t get much attention. Our own reviewer liked it, and Guy Ritchie definitely has a very unique style but not enough to stick out against Mission Impossible.

A quick note on budgets and dollar figures:
Films making back their budgets is a good sign, but that is just the money to film. It doesn’t include distribution and marketing. Marketing can cost as much as a film. That big Superbowl spot is spendy. So take that into account when judging a film’s success. Hitting $100 million isn’t the same as it once was.

All dollar amounts in the top 5 come from estimates based on ticket sales unless noted otherwise. Occasionally this article will be published when actual results come out, which is usually late Monday afternoon. For more about this and other ins and outs of movie tracking click here.
