in just over a week, Transformers: Age of Extinction passed $430 million dollars and you still HATE Michael Bay.
Michael Bay makes movies that fit into a certain mold…a very successful mold. You may not like his movies, but he is far from a terrible person for making them. Based on some of the comments I’ve seen on the webs recently, that distinction is not always clear. Let’s take this at face value: Michael Bay is never going to be considered the best filmmaker of our generation, but he certainly has his own flair and style.
Now, It could be impossible that your eyes hate him. The fast pace an pretty colors trigger a primal response in your brain like when you see movement in your peripheral vision or react to weird sounds, this is because your brain has already processed it, even before you are aware of it. So all that information, with all the pretty colors makes your brain try to decode it all, because one thing that our brains cannot stand is not understanding something so it takes interest in the complex image or a sort of liking it.
Hatred of Michael Bay is way more complex than it’s perceived. Look at his early stuff. I kind of like The Rock, I liked Bad Boys….for what they are, quintessential blockbuster fodder, that most of the movie going public have a great big soft spot for. Then, look at what Tony Scott made, and then what Paul Verhoeven did (and usually managed to poke a subversive tweak into) or John McTiernan or Shane Black’s initial scripts and later directions. These were people who made blockbusters, but had a knowing wink in their eye. They knew the genre they knew what they were making, and they had talent. I never felt they were talentless hacks, taking the piss. Just talented people, giving the people what they wanted. There is something to be said for creating a trademark style. Whether that style is good or not is another issue but the Louis Leterriers’ of the world would probably love to put out a product as divisive as Bay as opposed to homogenized Megaplex stat quo.
His films are obviously targeted toward a specific demographic and – clearly – he is reaching said demographic. Are his movies that terrible that you really *hate* them? Would it not be more appropriate to say that your tastes differ from those of others and that his movies – to you – are not the pinnacle of quality films? I just feel like people become far too angry about certain things that aren’t terribly important. Michael Bay makes movies that he enjoys, and, quite clearly, as LOT other people enjoy as well. Bay isn’t trying to compete with other movies. He is competing with a day at Six Flags. Bay doesn’t make movies, he makes roller-coaster rides. Rides that happen to be 165 minutes long. Rides that involve a lot of puking.
