Everything is a remix. On one hand, some would say that Playstation All Stars Battle Royale is a unashamed rip off of Nintendo’s ‘Super Smash Bros’. Others might argue, that this is a developing sub genre in a free for all brawler that hasn’t even begun to hit it’s stride yet. I’m actually shocked it took this long to assemble Sony’s iconic characters into their own game. ‘All Stars’ includes the likes of Dante, Kratos, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Sackboy and a number of other familiar faces. As the good ship, ‘All Stars’, springs more and more leaks before the release date expect to see even more roster additions get added (Crash Bandicoot anyone?).
I spent around a half an hour with this title, playing as Ratchet. I can get overwhelmed at times playing fighting games like this, as the game is often confusing, and not just in the “too much stuff happening at once, and where the hell is my guy?”. Once I’d played a few matches with Ratchet, I was never entirely sure what would happen when I pressed an attack button. Square, Triangle, and Circle control different attacks, but sometimes I’d push a button expecting to release a trio of Mr. Zurkon’s, and the Lombax would do something else entirely. It seemed like some attacks were continuous if you hold the button down, and others delivered ongoing damage to opponents.
It’s not a design flaw, it’s more like Superbot has included everything and the kitchen sink into ‘All Stars’. I had a fantastic time scrappin’ with this fun melee title. Did I mention, PaRappa the Rapper is in it as well? Playstation All Stars Battle Royale is set for release on November 20th.
