The Wizeguy: Who’s Up For A Road Trip?

In 2012, the city of Denver held their inaugural Comic Convention. A celebration of the books themselves, film and geek related media. It was an overwhelming success. The event posted just under 28,000 attendees over three days! Shocking to some but not to myself. It’s no secret that I love Denver and it’s suburbs (Shouts to the fam in Highlands Ranch!). I knew the mile high city had the type of fandom to support this kind of event, while unfortunately that city that I call home (Salt Lake) does not. Whether it’s from lack of ambition, location, a handful of badly represented local tries or just the simple fact that not enough of the people that should care in the Salty city, could care less.

This is why I’m suggesting a call to arms, let’s make the roadie to Colorado for the DCC! Scheduled to take place the last weekend of May, tickets for the convention are on sale now: three day passes are $45 Adult / $25 Teen (11-16 years old) Children 10 and under FREE. Tix are set for a SLIGHT price increase on March 1st… So, make plans now. Not now, but RIGHT now. Logistically, it’s totally doable. At around five hundred miles, You can make it to Denver via automobile in under eight hours (easy!). A flight could get you there in under an hour*

Returning to the Colorado Convention center, The DCC organizers will pack the hundred thousand plus square foot venue with even more cos-play, comic book writers and artists, voice actors, related exhibitors, literary guests, sci-fi notables and iconic celebrities in the world of geekdom. Expanding on lasts years almost two hundred comics and film guests in Artists Alley, and over one hundred and fifty purveyors of a wide variety of comics and pop culture merchandise will not be an issue as exhibitor booths and tables are already SOLD OUT (there is a waiting list).

While the Denver Comic Con might not be the cluster cuss that SDCC has turned into (Thank goodness!), this is a FULL SCALE experience. So far featured guests include (but not limited to, as they are constantly updating their site): Stan Lee, George Takei, Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, Nelsan Ellis, Kelly Hu, Eddie McClintock, Fiona Staples, George Perez and Phil Jimenez. A high quality production where you, the fan, won’t get lost in the shuffle.

Not to mention, the usual convention staples will be represented: Access to an embarrassment of comic book riches–more books than you will see likely until the next convention, Informative and interesting panels, a chance to buy exclusives and a fun atmosphere.

It’s what we all want right? A place where we get to socialize with our friends, see a few celebrities, take some great photos, get some cool swag and not break the bank and come away filled with a new sense of awesome.

AND…

The entire shooting match benefits Comic Book Classroom (www.comicbookclassroom.org), a free, nonprofit after-school program for fifth through eighth grade students that teaches literacy and arts education through comic books.
