SXSW: EXCLUSIVE Interview with Marvel Comics on Marvel Infinity, AR

Yesterday at SXSW Interactive, Marvel Comics brought the goods with major announcements about a new chapter in digital comics publishing and an amazing new Augmented Reality (AR) app to offer extra content to comics readers. I got to sit down with Marvel Editor in Chief Axel Alonso and Peter Phillips, head of Marvel Digital Media and go more in depth about what they were offering.

During the presentation we got a tease of the first several dozen panels of the first Infinite Comic, featuring Nova in a story written by Mark Waid and art by Stuart Immonen, and if I didn’t properly convey it before, it looks beautiful. Alonso and Phillips explained to me that within the Avengers vs X-men story, we’d get one Infinite comic “in every act of the story.” But rather than this being yet another book to check out during the AvX event, these will simply be distributed with your comics as a bonus feature. So, buy AvX #1, either online as a digital comic and you’ll get this, too, or buy at your local store (support your local comic book store, kids!) and your digital download code will include the Infinite Comic as well.

“What you’re seeing in the Nova story is our maiden voyage,” said Alonso, “This is a whole new canvas for us to work with,  a whole new set of tools, and as we’re learning how to use them, we’re getting better,” he added, referencing early art they’d seen for the next chapters that takes it to the next level. Indeed, if you follow Mark Waid on Twitter, you’ve heard him talk up some of the art.

They explain Infinite Comics will follow different prominent characters in the AvX storyline

“Infinite Comics stories will be tied to AvX– to provide added value to the story that can’t be found elsewhere. They will illuminate the experience… they are NOT deleted scenes, they bring additional texture to the story.”

“What it comes down to is how the fans respond. How, you, the fans, respond will determine how many more of these things we do.” So, fans, we have great power, and great responsibility. I, for one, am drooling all over myself like an idiot for this.

I also asked them how they liked the crowd and if they’d be back for SXSW in the future. From their reactions, if they’ve got an announcement next year, they’ll be back. This comic book reader can’t wait, and hope to see them back in 2013.

Oh, yeah, and here’s a couple of press releases to get all the gory details.
