Who’s Afraid of ‘Bitch Planet’

“Bitch Planet” is a comic I sometimes try to hide from my mom. She’s not big into expletives. But in the end, it’s such an important work of art that expletive or not it’s imperative to spread the good word about it.

The story is simple: women who do not fit a certain mold (the one set forth by the world’s powerful/rich/white men) are shipped off planet to a correctional facility where they are punished for being “non compliant.”

But the deeper message, that our society does not embrace individuality, has struck chords with hundreds of dedicated readers. Men and women alike, anyone who finds themselves marching to the beat of their own drummer, have embraced the concept of “non compliant” as a way of saying they are who they are. Merchandise and even tattoos of the NC logo have started to run rampant.

The panels are vibrant and incredibly emotional, telling the stories of women who are deemed too fat, too gay, too opinionated, too anything. Each character is written with so much depth, and the art celebrates all body types. But the best part of the books is the essay on feminism at the end of each story. These are non-fictional, relatable tales from real-life non compliant women who are saying enough is enough.
