Season Two of ‘Fargo’ Will Travel Back in Time

“Fargo” easily stood as one of the best, if not the best, new show of the year. It took the cinematic flair and style of the Coen Brothers’ classic and infused it into an utterly fantastic and engrossing new story set in the same locale but more modern times. It was like watching a ten plus hour extension of the original movie that was just as good as its source material, thanks in part to the razor sharp writing, excellent cinematography and wonderful performances (Billy Bob Thornton will forever be remembered as one of the creepiest characters ever portrayed on the small screen). “Fargo” easily deserves all the awards it is being nominated for and will hopefully win.

Thus, it was no surprise that it was picked up for a second season as was announced at the TCA Summer Press Tour. What was really interesting were the few tidbits of information we were given about the direction it will be taking.

It will be set nearly 30 years before the first season in 1979 and will follow the life of Lou Solverson, (who you will remember was the father of our heroine, Deputy Molly Solverson) who is 33 and freshly back from the Vietnam War and trying to reintegrate into society. Molly will only be four years old during this story, and we will meet not only her, but her mother.

Creator Noah Hawley said he wanted to tell a new story with completely different actors for the new characters and didn’t want to involve any of the past cast in the new season, as it would feel “gimmicky” if, Allison Tolman (Molly Solverson) had a cameo or role as her last character’s mother.

Not much more else was shared except that the setting will take place between Sioux Falls, Calgary and Fargo, and that we will learn what happened in the “Sioux Falls Incident” which was referenced in the episode “A Fox, A Rabbit and a Cabbage”.

“Fargo: Backlash”, as Hawley said it might be called, should hit FX sometime in the fall of 2015.
