TV: Danny Cannon to Direct ‘Gotham’ Pilot

FOX is continuing to move forward with their DC Comics television series, “Gotham”, and now appear to have hired a director for the inaugural episode, Danny Cannon, according to Deadline.

Cannon has a bit of experience in this field having directed the pilots for “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Nikita,” and most recently, “The Tomorrow People” for the CW. He was also the director for “Judge Dredd” – no, not the kick-ass “DREDD” film from last year, the atrocious one from 1995 starring Sylvester Stallone.

For those of you perhaps unfamiliar with the development of “Gotham”, the series is currently in development from the creator of “The Mentalist”, Bruno Heller. The series will focus on a young Detective James Gordon in the Gotham Police Department and will take place many years prior to Bruce Wayne becoming Batman. There are rumors, however, that we may see a young Bruce Wayne early on in the series and perhaps see Detective Gordon tasked with attempting to solve the murder of his parents.

I know a lot of people are looking forward to this series, but there just doesn’t seem to be anything about this series that can get me excited for it. One concern I have is the series attempting to shoehorn in young versions of future major villains from Batman’s Rogues Gallery in cheeseball ways. I’m just not sure how the creators are going to be able to make this feel like a DC Comics Universe with a show predating so many characters that make Gotham Gotham.

That all said, this show is just in development right now and perhaps the creators have some brilliant ideas up their sleeves that will make this show a “must watch”. After all, I am the guy who thought “Sleepy Hollow” was going to be a shit show, and now I can’t get enough of it.

We will all just have to wait and see what “Gotham” has in store for us, and while there is no premiere date set for the series yet, I don’t think it would be too far-fetched to expect it to hit the airwaves this Fall.
