Red Bull eSports Explores StarCraft

The world of eSports is growing larger every day. One of the biggest names in eSports is Major League Gaming. The MLG was founded in 2002. By 2011 the audience grew to 3.5 million people. A year later that number grew to 11.7 million unique views. 2012 was referred to as the “Year of eSports“.

One of the most prominent games in eSports is the StarCraft franchise. In South Korea StarCraft: Brood War was televisied on multiple channels with an audience of millions of people. In recent years StarCraft II has taken a similar hold in the United States with streaming media.

Earlier this year Blizzard revamped the Starcraft II World Championship Series league by investing 1.6 million dollars into the tournaments, and streaming the footage for free online. A bigger budget means more prize money for the competitors, which in turn means you don’t have to get first place to make a living playing StarCraft II competitively.

Red Bull has now joined the eSports explosion. They are hosting a tournament November 23-24 with $50,000 in prize money at the Red Bull Battle Grounds in New York. Recently, Red Bull eSports started a series of YouTube videos that explore eSports, StarCraft II specifically. Watch them below for a window into the juggernaut that is competitive gaming.
